{"id":664,"date":"2011-04-30T14:48:43","date_gmt":"2011-04-30T13:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.edwardsd.co.uk\/work\/blog\/2011\/04\/30\/camera-shutter-aperture-dof\/"},"modified":"2011-05-03T09:38:40","modified_gmt":"2011-05-03T08:38:40","slug":"camera-shutter-aperture-dof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edwardsd.co.uk\/work\/2011\/04\/camera-shutter-aperture-dof\/","title":{"rendered":"Camera, Shutter, Aperture &amp; DOF"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"3DWordSection1\">\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\"><strong>SHUTTER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">The Cameras shutter controls the length of time the sensor is exposed to\u00a0light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">Shutter speeds normally operate somewhere between 30 seconds and 1\/100 of a\u00a0second.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">Fast shutter speeds (over\u00a01\/250 sec) freeze action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">Slow\u00a0shutter speeds (1 sec \u2013 30 secs) make photography possible in very\u00a0low light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">For hand held photography\u00a0a minimum shutter speed of about 1\/30 sec is required, below this some\u00a0means of steadying the camera is required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\"><strong>APERTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">The lens\u00a0aperture controls the quantity of light reaching the cameras\u00a0sensor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">In dim or gloomy conditions\u00a0the sensor needs a bigger aperture to let in more\u00a0light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">In bright conditions a smaller\u00a0aperture is required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">Aperture is\u00a0measured in f-stop numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">The\u00a0normal range of apertures is from f\/2.8 \u2013 f\/22<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">F\/2.8 is a BIG aperture letting in more light (in =<br \/>\ngloomy conditions)<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">F\/22 is a SMALL\u00a0aperture letting in less light (in bright conditions)<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\"><strong>DEPTH OF\u00a0FIELD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">Changing the aperture will also\u00a0control the depth of field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">A big aperture (f\/2.8 \u2013 f\/5.6) will give a small depth of field. This\u00a0effect will be increased by using a zoom lens, the longer the zoom the\u00a0shorter the depth of field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">A small\u00a0aperture (f\/16 \u2013 f\/22) will give a large depth of field. This\u00a0effect will be increased by using a wide angle lens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">Use big\u00a0apertures (f\/2.8 \u2013 f\/5.5) for portraits and still life where you\u00a0want to blur the background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">Use\u00a0small apertures (f\/16 \u2013 f\/22) for landscapes ar any photo where\u00a0you want foreground, mid &amp; background sharp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\"><strong>SCENE MODES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">Your cameras scene modes will\u00a0select shutter and aperture for you depending on the scene mode\u00a0selected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">If you select\u00a0\u2018portrait\u2019 or \u2018macro\u2019 (close-up), the camera\u00a0will assume a short depth of field is best and choose a big\u00a0aperture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">If you select\u00a0\u2018sport\u2019 the camera will choose a fast shutter speed to\u00a0freeze the action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"3DMsoNormal\">Selecting\u00a0\u2018landscape\u2019 mode will give a setting with a larger depth of\u00a0field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SHUTTER The Cameras shutter controls the length of time the sensor is exposed to\u00a0light.
