I&#8217;ve seen it too many times&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As there are a number of common culprits for these space eating monsters I&#8217;m going to post the fixes here in one sweet spot, the <strong>&#8220;Windows System Cleanup&#8221;<\/strong> post.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Windows &#8220;Hiberfil.sys&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hibernate mode uses the hiberfil.sys file to store the current state (memory) of the PC on the hard drive and the file is used when Windows is turned back on.<br \/>\nAlways a cause of taking up C:\\ the easiest option is to switch it off. Use the following command line to disable:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">Enter &quot;powercfg.exe -h off&quot;<\/pre>\n<p>Pagefile.sys is a windows system file used as a <a title=\"Swap File\" href=\"http:\/\/www.computerhope.com\/jargon\/s\/swapfile.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swap file<\/a> and was designed to improve performance. Windows uses it as memory location in case the application you&#8217;re running ends up needing more RAM than you actually have. This file is stored on the C:\\ root but can take up space. Best option is to move it or reduce it (Reducing isn&#8217;t really a recommended option)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right click on &#8216;PC&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Left click on &#8216;Properties&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Left click on &#8216;Advanced system configuration&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>If needed, left click on &#8216;OK&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Select &#8216;Advanced options&#8217; tab.<\/li>\n<li>Left click on &#8216;Configuration&#8217; inside &#8216;Throughput&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Select &#8216;Advanced options&#8217; tab.<\/li>\n<li>Left click on &#8216;Change&#8217; inside &#8216;Virtual memory&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Edit your preferences.<\/li>\n<li>Close all the opened windows by accepting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Windows &#8220;Search&#8221; Folder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Windows &#8220;WINSXS&#8221; Folder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reference this post:<a title=\"Saving Windows Disk Space | Reducing Size of WINSXS folder | Server 2008 R2\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/pOPt8-xM\"> Saving Windows Disk Space | Reducing Size of WINSXS folder | Server 2008 R2<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Windows Shadow Copies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shadow copies take up space in C:\\System Volume Information (Hidden Folder) They can be reduced or completely deleted using&nbsp;<a title=\"VSSAdmin\" href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/EXctPV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VSSAdmin<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shows Shadow Copy Versions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">vssadmin list shadowstorage<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Deletes all Shadow Copies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">vssadmin delete shadows \/all<\/pre>\n<p><strong>BranchCache &#8220;PeerDistRepub&#8221; folder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-server\/networking\/branchcache\/branchcache\">BranchCache<\/a> is basically a cached version of updates from Microsoft. Folder can be flushed\/cleared using netsh<br \/>\nCheck Cache<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">netsh branchcache show status all<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Flush Cache<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">netsh branchcache flush<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Uninstall BranchCache Feature (PowerShell)<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">Uninstall-WindowsFeature Branchcache<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although nowadays HDD space is a cheap commodity there is always a Windows C:\\ running somewhere with a partition that is busting at the seams and ready to explode.
